19th Century Tureen DishThis glazed earthenware is a product of the Daisy Bank Pottery in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. The floral design is in-glaze, and is depicted on both the inner and outer surface of the tureen.
It had been previously restored in a manner which had become extremely disfiguring with age. Shellac had been used in excessive amounts to adhere broken shards; this protruded from the break edges and concealed much original surface. In addition, impurities from within the ceramic clay had caused severe staining visible from underneath the glaze. The effects were reduced through poulticing treatments.
