19th Century Chinese Porcelain UrnThe urn pictured was most likely manufactured for export within 19th century China. It had previously been restored due to breakages; animal based glue and rivets were evident. In what is assumed as an attempt to conceal such restorations, all shard joints and plaster filled areas were hidden beneath conspicuous layers of green paint.
However the shard joins had become weakened with age, causing misalignment and the loss of original material from the rim. In addition, both handles had become detached and subsequently lost. The vase is one of a twin pair currently owned by Belvoir Castle. This allowed the design of the original handles to be established and a mould to be taken.
